The GCC Wave Is a Sales Talent Story Too

India is on track for a record 125–130 new global capability centres this year. Behind the real estate headlines sits a quieter battle: commercial talent that can carry a global mandate.

India's GCC ecosystem is having its biggest year on record. Industry reports project 125 to 130 new greenfield centres by the end of 2026, with over 70,000 jobs already created this year. Hyderabad has edged ahead of Bengaluru in new setups, Pune is consolidating its position, and tier-2 cities like Coimbatore and Kochi are quietly entering the map.

Most of the coverage focuses on engineering seats. But every GCC that matures past year one faces the same question: who owns the customer, the region and the number? That is a sales hiring question — and it is where many otherwise excellent build-outs stall.

Volume hiring is out; precision is in

Workforce studies of Indian GCCs show a decisive shift from volume expansion to capability-led recruitment. Nearly two-thirds of new roles now demand AI, data or intelligent-automation skills, and critical positions routinely take more than sixty days to close. The hiring pyramid is tilting toward deployment-ready, mid-career professionals — the four-to-ten-year band — while fresher intake narrows.

The commercial layer follows the same pattern, with an added complication: enterprise sales talent with genuine global exposure is a far thinner pool than engineering talent. A GCC sales leader must navigate time zones, matrixed stakeholder maps and headquarters expectations — a combination that does not appear on a resume.

Start small, but design the commercial core early

The dominant playbook this year is phased: validate with fifty to a hundred seats, then scale toward five hundred and beyond. Our advice to clients is to design the commercial core during the validation phase, not after it. The first sales leader, pre-sales consultant and alliances manager in a GCC set the tone for every quota carrier who follows.

India's talent market rewards companies that treat these hires as strategic appointments rather than headcount. With the right search discipline — market mapping, capability-led evaluation and honest calibration — the GCC wave is an opportunity to build a genuinely global revenue engine from Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Pune. That is precisely the work Leon & Walker was built for.
